Nick and I had some special fun meeting the capybaras up-close at the San Diego Zoo last weekend!
These guys are so cute! They look like giant guinea pigs, which they are closely related to, but much bigger, getting up to 2 feet tall and weighing up to 140 pounds. They are the largest rodent in the world. Capybaras are native to South America, and are found close to water sources, where they swim and eat water plants and grasses. We got to feed them kale, cucumber, and yams. They enjoyed getting a scratch in their course fur, which is described well by one of the youngster's names: Bristle.
