It was wonderful to see a group of beautiful monarch butterflies flitting about at the San Diego Zoo!
Their populations have been dwindling due to a number of reasons. A few of the problems are a shortage of the milkweed plant that the monarch caterpillar needs to feed on, and also a decrease in the forest region in Mexico where the monarch butterflies migrate to survive the winter. By providing the necessary milkweed, the San Diego Zoo has helped to increase the numbers of these threatened butterflies. And there are more caterpillars on the milkweed plants, promising more butterflies to come! Flutter on, magical monarchs!
