Mary the Asian Elephant and Mila the African Elephant

Elephants are such social creatures, and what a heartwarming sight to witness the affection between these two girls. Mary, the leader of the herd at the San Diego Zoo, continues the kindness she showed toward Mila when they first met in January of 2014. Mila had previously been without any elephant interaction, having been in a circus for 30 years. Mary’s calm and gentle introduction was the first step toward being comfortable in her new herd. Thanks to Mary, and the loving care of her keepers, Mila seems to be right at home now. And it seems she and Mary have a very special bond.
